When Columbus sailed to the America’s in 1492 his ships carried hemp seed. This was in case of shipwreck so they would be able to grow crops for both their raw materials & as a source of nutrition. 90% of all ships sails and ropes have been made from hemp for thousands of years.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp themselves and washington even lamented about not getting back early enough to separate the males and female plants. It appears our first president was smoking cannabis as that would be the main reason to separate them by sex.

Thomas Jefferson was much more than just our Third president he was likely also our nation’s first drug smuggler having smuggled hemp seeds out of china and france back here to the colonies by the 17th Century. China (wanting to keep its monopoly), made it a death penalty offense to export any such seeds. That was hemp though, probably not as smokable at that point in time as any of the Indica strains we know about today but that would change over time too

The first drafts of the Constitution and Bill of Rights were also written on hemp paper.
